Discussion~Fanfiction: Harmless Fun or a Big Problem

First off, I love fanfiction. I think it is fun how people manipulates the existing world and how they enterperate with characters and how they would handle in certain situations. However, there are other people that would not follow the terms and conditions with fanfiction (and yes there are terms and conditions), for example copyright, destroying the imagery the creators made, changing characters and somehow made an entire story about sex, then lots of people will have an negative opinion against fanfiction.

To start with, I want to explain the positive aspects of fanfiction. Most people who writes fanfiction mostly use it to practice creative writing, and what better way to practice than writing about something you are a fan of. Not only that but is also really fun what direction different fanfictiongo to make certain worlds more interesting. Lastly, and I could be wrong is that people read fanfiction to get away from reality and most likely wants to live in their own fantasy , whether if it’s pairings, being in a different location, crossover between different worlds and crazy adventures from simple one-shot stories to long, detailed stories. Unfortunately, their are people out there that would make fun the idea of fanfiction and willing to give it a bad impression  with bad spelling and grammer, put sex in every corner of the story (and just to be clear, not all fanfiction revolves around sex) and purposely write a really bad fanfiction just to insult the original world. For example, some guy wrote fanfiction for Hetalia (an anime about humanized countries) and it’s a just a bad spelling, racist insults against different nationalities in general.

So those are the genral pros and cons on fanfiction, however fanfiction is getting more attention thanks to a specific book series. The books series that are now getting films based on them and charity shops are getting more and more of these books more than any books you can think of.

Fifty Shades of Grey

The reason why I am targeting Fifty Shades of Grey is because it was originally a fanfiction for Twilight and people were debating whether if it is copyright or not. But in a way, it kind of is. In my opinion, E.L. James wouldn’t have written Fifty Shades of Grey if it wasn’t for Twilight, and yet she somehow managed to credit herself by getting billions of pounds. On the other hand she could used Twilight as one of her inspiration for her books like many authors used many books as inspiration, but again it is debatable. Do comment and tell me your thoughts about this.

The book that recently came out that could be classified as fanfiction is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. as it is not written by J.K Rowling, it’s just approved by her, and to be fair there are some elements why people would have these thoughts about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. We can imagine that J.K. Rowling could take a different direction when it comes to Albus’s and Scorpius’s adventures, but we will never know. J.K. Rowling didn’t write about Albus and Scorpius, so we don’t know if they are truley like that, if Harry Potter would have difficulties being a dad or (spoiler alert!!!!!!!!!!) if Voldermort will have his own daughter in the future. So the play and the script are out but people are still creating ‘What ifs’ with the next generation on their fanfiction as it is not exactly concrete with J.K. Rowling herself since she didn’t write anything about them.

The last book is not a fanfiction persay but it has a character writing fanfiction. I absolutely love this book because it does give fanfiction a spotlight from different perceptions and it can be relatable to lots of people who loves fanfiction and that is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. About a girl called Cathy that has social anxiety issues and deals with it by writing fanfiction which caused her to be a fantastic writer. So this little stand alone does give fanfiction a positive aspect from the main protagonist’s point of view, and if it helps her with both her anxiety and her creative writing, however there was a character in the book that is completely against fanfiction and thinks it is copyright no matter how you percept it. But this character can tell that Cathy has writing talent, however the thing is if Cathy didn’t write fanfiction, she probably wouldn’t have that writing talent, that could bring in some debate.

That is all to discuss about fanfiction, so the idea is fanfiction can be harmless fun if you understand the rules behind it, and if you have a profile on fanfiction.net there are actually terms and conditions so that fanfiction can be used for creative writing purposes and not to just abuse the idea.

So guys, what do you think? Do you agree or disagree with fanfiction? Do you think it’s harmless fun or becoming a big problem? Do leave in comments so we can discuss it.
